Eleanora Fagan better known as Billie Holiday born April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Sarah Julia "Sadie" Fagan and Clarence Holiday.

Sadie Fagan Armstrong’s mother moved to New York to look for a job and soon after Billie followed. Harlem night clubs was where she really shined. It was also where she created her stage name coined from the actress Billie Dove.

In the 1930’s Holiday introduced the poem strange fruit to her record label Columbia. Columbia didn’t allow her to record it because of its controversial message. Strange fruit is about the lynching of a black man. Holiday ended up recording the song with the record label Commodore. It became one of her classics
